Menstrual Cycle

Broadly, the menstrual cycle is divided into four phases – 1. menstrual phase 2. follicular phase 3. ovulation phase 4. luteal phase.

Menstrual phase:
It is the beginning phase of the menstrual cycle in which the shedding of the uterine wall takes place. In the case of no fertilization, this shedding takes place and most women face a lot of cramps in the lower abdomen. In this phase the level of estrogen is high.

Follicular phase:
The follicle gets mature into the Graafian follicle (which is a mature follicle and is ready to release the egg). During this phase the level of FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) is high.

Ovulatory phase:
At this stage, the egg is released from the mature Graafian follicle. It happens on the 14th day of the cycle. This time the level of LH hormone is high and is termed an LH surge.

Luteal phase:
During this phase, the level of LH and FSH starts decreasing and the remnant of the Graafian follicle after the release of the egg is called corpus luteum and further produces progesterone.
